John Krysinski’s SGN (Some Good News) podcast went viral during the initial days of the Covid19 pandemic because people were desperate for good news. His podcast showcased car parades for a child who just finished cancer treatments, standing ovations for first responders and healthcare workers, birthday parties where families serenaded their loved ones outside of nursing homes. Tear-jerking and heart-rendering. Grace bringing good news in the midst of turmoil and pain.
Bob Dylan recently gave a rare interview, and in it, he remarked good news is hard to find these days. “Good news in today’s world is like a fugitive, treated like a hoodlum and put on the run. All we see is good-for-nothing news.” But then Dylan offered where we might find good news–from an ancient word often dismissed as irrelevant and overused. The word gospel. “On the other hand, gospel news is exemplary. It can give you courage. You can pace your life accordingly.” Gospel means good news. It is packed with grace, hope, purpose, and love.
